Jeffry Archer, Dean of Libraries, Museums, and the Press at Baylor University, welcomes Erin Moniz, Associate Chaplain and Director of Chapel at Baylor, for a conversation about her recent InterVarsity Press publication, “Knowing and Being Known: Hope for All Our Intimate Relationships,” on Tuesday, September 16, at Noon as part of the Baylor Libraries Author Series. Moniz will converse about her book with her colleague and friend Malcolm Foley, Special Advisor to the President for Equity and Campus Engagement at Baylor, in the Schumacher Flex Commons on the main floor of Moody Memorial Library on Baylor’s Waco campus.

“Moniz’ work exposes the unhealthy frameworks for relationships at work in both the culture at large and churches and offers a fresh approach centered on communication supported by commitment, self-giving love, and curiosity,” said Jeffry Archer, Dean of Libraries, Museums, and the Press. “This important work provides an excellent opportunity for engagement among our students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Baylor and Waco community.”

Moniz is a deacon in the Anglican Church of North America and is active in spiritual formation, mentoring, discipleship, and programming for emerging adults. She is a trained conciliator, mediator, and conflict coach. In addition to preaching, guest lecturing in college classes, and a variety of public speaking engagements, she is a regular contributor to Christianity Today, AMEN (Anglican Multi-ethnic Network), Anglican Compass, and Mutuality Magazine. She is a co-founder and co-host of the podcast Mutuality Matters: Gender Theology for the Gospel Empowerment of Men and Women. Her research interests include interpersonal relationships, emerging adulthood, racial healing and reconciliation ministries, as well as ecumenical and interfaith cooperation.

“As I researched intimate relationships, what I discovered reframed conversations I had with students during 25 years of student ministry about identity, shame, hope, loneliness, connection, the gospel, and intimacy that moves far beyond romance idolatry,” said Moniz. “I hope that this book will change people’s lives like it changed mine and provide real hope for all our intimate relationships.”

Foley is the author of the recently released “The Anti-Greed Gospel: Why The Love of Money is the Root of Racism and How the Church Can Create A New Way Forward.” He earned his Ph.D. from Baylor in Religion in 2021 after completing an M.Div. at Yale and a bachelor’s in religious studies and finance (with a minor in classics) at Washington University in St. Louis.

This event is free and open to the public. The conversation will be followed by a time of audience Q&A, a reception with light refreshments, and a book signing with Moniz. Copies of “Knowing and Being Known” will be available for purchase at the event from the Baylor Bookstore.

The Baylor Libraries Author Series celebrates select published works of Baylor faculty, staff, students, and alumni throughout the academic year. These conversations engage the Baylor and Waco community and encourage continued dialogue on important topics.
