Elise Edwards and Ann Theriot Explore the Theology and Ethics of Architecture
On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. the next session of the Readers Meet the Author series, hosted by the Baylor Libraries, will be held in the Schumacher Flex Commons of Moody Memorial Library and via Zoom Webinar. The event will feature Assistant Professor of Religion, Dr. Elise Edwards to discuss her book, “Architecture, Theology, and Ethics: Making Architectural Design More Just,” in conversation with Clinical Associate Professor of Interior Design, Ann Theriot.
“I hope that the design process is demystified in a way that encourages more Christians to participate in shaping our world—even in small ways—because design isn't just for architects and other experts,” said Edwards.
Edwards is assistant professor of religion at Baylor University and received her Ph.D. in religion from Claremont Graduate University. Edwards worked as an architect in Washington, D.C. prior to her pursuit of theology, and obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Architecture from Florida A&M University. Edwards’ book intertwines the world of architecture with the world of theology and ethics, arguing that when architectural design is thought about ethically, it can become an opportunity to positively impact humanity and creation.
“I hope readers learn about practices like casting a vision, empathetic listening, and spiritual discernment that they can apply not only to design, but also to other kinds of collective action,” said Edwards.
This event is free and open to the public. Following the conversation, there will be a reception with refreshments and a book signing. At the event, copies of “Architecture, Theology, and Ethics: Making Architectural Design More Just” will be available for purchase by the Baylor Bookstore.
The Readers Meet the Author series is presented by the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost. The series fosters opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and others to gather for shared reflection and collegial conversation about big ideas.
