Browning Scholars Discuss Unpublished Poem, the Brownings' Courtship, and Victorian Honeymoon Traditions
Armstrong Browning Library & Museum proudly presents its virtual 2020 Benefactors Day lecture featuring Dr. Marjorie Stone of Dalhousie University and Dr. Beverly Taylor from the University of North Carolina. Stone and Taylor will present "Wilder Ever Still & Wilder!: The Brownings' Courtship, Victorian Wedding Journeys, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Unpublished Honeymoon Poem" on Thursday, November 5 at 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. This event is free and available to the public.
Stone and Taylor are two of the world's leading authorities on the works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and are certainly no strangers to Armstrong Browning Library and Baylor University, having used the archives many times in the course of their research and presented at past conferences.
Dr. Stone has published on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, literary collaboration, Tennyson, Dickens, Gaskell, Christina Rossetti, Toni Morrison, sex trafficking, cultural citizenship, “retooling the humanities,” among other subjects. Most recently, she was volume co-editor for 3 of 5 volumes in The Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (2010), and recipient of a National Humanities Center Fellowship (2011) for a project on 19th-century literary transnationalism and the cosmopolitan citizenship formations arising out of a number of intersecting or linked movements from the 1830s to the 1880s: abolitionism, the Italian liberation movement, the peace and free-trade movement, the proto-Zionist movement, and the anti-trafficking movement often referred to as the “white slave trade” controversy.
Dr. Taylor specializes in Victorian literature and culture, especially poetry and women novelists. She has published on Byron, Shelley, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Tennyson, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Siddal, Arnold, Carlyle, and Charlotte Bronte. She has also written on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arthurian literature, the poet Francis Thompson, Victorian art, Chaucer, Gottfried von Strassburg, and Neo-Victorian fiction. She currently concentrates on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the subject of her book manuscript now under review. Her publications include: The Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, co-edited with Sandra Donaldson, Marjorie Stone, and Rita Patteson (volumes 1, 2, and 5 (2010)); Elizabeth Barrett Browning: Selected Poems, co-edited with Marjorie Stone (2009); Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806-2006, co-edited with Marjorie Stone (2006); “Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Unpublished Vaucluse Fragment and a Poetics in Transition: ‘Wilder ever still & wilder!,’” co-authored with Marjorie Stone (2019); and “The Gender Politics of Portraiture in The Professor,” (2016).
