Brandon Quarles

Brandon Quarles has served as the Director of the Law Library since February 2000. He is responsible for all aspects of library operations, including the following: budgeting; financial management; hiring and supervision of library faculty and staff; collection development; strategic planning with respect to the future growth and development of the Law Library; initiating and monitoring library programs and services; and implementing the use of new technologies in public and technical services. He ensures that the Law Library effectively supports the teaching, scholarship, research and service programs of the Law School.

After earning his J.D. from the University of Mississippi in 1993, Quarles entered private practice in Dallas. He then returned to school and earned a Master of Library Science from the University of North Texas in 1995. His first job after library school was that of a reference librarian at the University of Richmond School of Law. He moved from Virginia back to his home state of Texas in 1998 to work at Baylor.

Quarles teaches all of the first- and second-quarter research classes in the Legal Analysis, Research, and Communications (LARC) program. Along with Professor Matt Cordon, he is the coauthor of Researching Texas Law (4th ed. 2019) and Specialized Topics in Texas Legal Research (2005), both published by William S. Hein & Co., Inc. Quarles and Cordon have also coauthored book chapters on Texas practice materials as well as historical Texas legal information. Quarles' other publications include articles dealing with various aspects of print and electronic research, book reviews, and in-house publications such as research guides.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities and administrative duties in the Law Library, Quarles has overseen a number of Law School projects over the years. He served on the Law Center Project Committee and coordinated the Law School's physical move to the Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center in 2001. He also chaired the self-study process for the past two ABA accreditation/AALS membership reviews of the Law School (2005 and 2011).

When not teaching or managing the Law Library, Quarles can often be found riding his motorcycle or mountain bike. He also serves as the faculty advisor to the Baylor Law chapter of the Christian Legal Society and stays regularly involved in various ministry activities throughout central Texas.
