On Thursday, February 15, at 12:15 p.m. on the main floor of Moody Memorial Library, Dr. David Lyle Jeffrey, former Baylor Provost, emeritus professor of Literature and the Humanities, and resident distinguished professor of Baylor's Institute for Studies of Religion, will discuss his recently released spiritual memoir, “We Were a Peculiar People Once: Confession of an Old-Time Baptist” (Baylor Press, 2023), with Dr. Doug Henry, dean of the Honors College at Baylor University. An audience Q&A, a reception featuring light refreshments, and a book signing with the author will follow the conversation.

“Jeffrey’s book is a treasure, full of stories and reflections that are at once wise, funny, and poignant,” said Dr. Darin Davis, clinical professor in the Honors College at Baylor. “More than a spiritual memoir, however, it is an encouragement to become more aware and grateful for all those ‘peculiar people’ who, in big and small ways, shape our own stories of coming to faith.”

This conversation is part of the university’s Readers Meet the Author series presented by the Office of the Provost and the Office of the President and hosted by the Baylor Libraries. The series features Baylor faculty authors selected by Provost Nancy Brickhouse, and is designed to celebrate their accomplishments and encourage shared reflection and collegial conversation about big ideas.

Dr. Linda Livingstone, president of Baylor University, sees the important contribution of this series to the community: “This series presents a unique opportunity to showcase the exceptional work of our faculty while also celebrating that which is great about the academe — our ability to share perspectives and ideas with each other for the sake of civil academic discourse."

This event is free and available to those participating in person and via Zoom Webinar. The Baylor Bookstore will be on hand to sell copies of the book for signing. For more information about the Readers Meet the Author Series, visit provost.web.baylor.edu/rma.
